Our core specialist consulting areas sit at the nexus of surveying and assessment, architecture and project management – bringing a 360-degree perspective to problem solving, and developing ideas and strategies that work in practice.

Project Management

Artfully managing the science of building, a project manager is responsible for making things happen.
Good project management is not just adhering to contract procedure but a blend of experience, skills, discipline, curiosity, knowledge, humility, resilience and flexibility. It is the art of connecting a wide array of people with diverse points of view together with the science of applying a corps of tools, processes and methodologies.
We take great satisfaction in applying the right mix of tools and qualities, science and art, to help a client achieve their vision.

Programming

A programme can be used to plan, communicate and/or monitor a sequence of works.
We apply long term experience and knowledge of construction to review, create and monitor programmes that are accurate and effective, for clients who need an independent perspective or a deeper skill-set in programming technology.
We believe all programmes should be mathematically robust, communicate well, and be easy to apply.
We are familiar with many forms of established and emerging network analysis software and will always recommend the appropriate tool for the job.

Teaching and Mentoring

We love sharing our knowledge and learning new things. We mentor young professionals on the pathway to membership of the NZIBS.
Section 1 staff have also been invited to deliver specialist courses on aspects of the built environment at Unitec and project management at the University of Canterbury.
We relish the opportunity that this work brings to introduce us to new ideas and new points of view.

Independent Investigation

Our investigations leverage the diverse skills and experiences of all our staff to get to the bottom of things.
From building remediations to complex legal cases, we conduct thorough building investigations analysing documentation and as-built situations.
We can conduct on-site testing to verify our opinions and refer to a network of like-minded experts for analysis and commentary on specific subjects.
Our reporting is substantial, clear and reliable and based on un-biased scientific process.

Project Compliance

Our familiarity with construction practices and Building Act legislation ideally places us to support projects’ compliance systems.
We can help to prepare applications for various stages of Territorial Authority controls including Amendments to Consent, Certificates of Public Use and Code Compliance Certificates for both construction and private clients.
We can also offer site support to manage documentation: We do not on-sell any specific software but work with you and your people to expand or distill your existing systems as needed.
Documents are Information. Information is (sort of) Knowledge and everyone knows that Knowledge is Power. Having good document control systems makes for a powerful project.

Expert Witness Service

Because we are trusted as highly experienced technical experts in the industry, we have been asked many times to assist with independent advice in building disputes. These range from single houses to large multi-residential complexes and cases that involve hundreds of individual buildings.
Our proven independence has made us the trusted advisor for building product manufacturers, homeowners, bodies corporate, councils, architects, tradespeople and commercial property owners.

Weathertightness Investigation

This is still the most widespread issue facing New Zealand's buildings. We provide thorough weather tightness investigations that look at the root causes of the problems through rigorous testing. We really understand how a building comes together and select the right partners where needed (fire engineer, structural engineer). You will get answers on how to make things right.

Concrete Building Investigations

Concrete building investigations

In recent years we have developed significant expertise in the investigation of concrete structures, pre-cast and concrete blocks. Leaks and other building defects need to be investigated and researched with a different skill set when it comes to concrete.

Timber Remediation

During remediation, timber framing has to be assessed and all damaged timber must be removed. We follow widely accepted guidelines and well-documented processes to ensure that the right amount of timber framing is removed. This is an integral part of the cost-effective repair of a building. We also provide detailed quantity measure schedules and clear records of this work. Often the timber replacement survey also forms part of our engagement as an expert witness.

Auckland Unitary Plan

Auckland’s new planning regulations can be exciting but daunting at the same time. The AUP is a hefty planning document and one could easily get lost in the deep jungle of abstract planning rules. We have the expertise to apply the complex planning rules and regulations to your property.

Feasibility Study

We can evaluate and explore the potential of your site by identifying specific conditions and constraints like contours, orientation, and your budget as well as development regulations. During a feasibility study a series of different options will be developed.

Holistic Design Approach

A holistic building approach considers aspects such as affordability, economy, sustainability and emotion as essential design elements. We always aim for quality and innovative solutions that guarantee comfortability within a contemporary design.
